Shape the Future of Travel Together
Community support is at the heart of Michigan’s North+South Passenger Rail project. Public engagement has played, and will continue to play, a critical role in shaping the vision for this corridor.
So far, residents, business owners, and community leaders from across the state have voiced strong interest in expanded rail service.
As the current planning study progresses, project partners will continue to gather input from across Michigan and communities along the line.
What we’ve been hearing
Feedback has consistently highlighted the need for safer, more accessible, and more sustainable travel options that connect rural and urban communities.
Communities raised key questions about station locations, long-term parking needs, and how passengers will reach their final destinations. They also recognized that a project of this scale will require strong state support, clear governance, and a well-planned funding structure.
Public Survey!
As we are working through a major planning study for the route this year, we want to hear from you! Your input is essential. By completing this survey, you’ll help us understand travel needs, preferences, and priorities – ensuring that this service is designed for the people who will use it.
Community Meetings
Stakeholder Sessions
As part of the 2025 rail study, the Groundwork team visited 10 cities across the state to meet with a wide range of community representatives: think city and county officials, downtown development authorities, chambers of commerce, disability networks, transit agencies, universities, tourism groups, and economic development organizations.
The purpose was to update each community on what is happening with the rail study and to learn from them the local needs and potential barriers to launching a new train service.
Public Meetings
The team plans to host a number of meetings with the broader public in early 2026 to review the study results and recommendations, answer questions, and receive input.
